Carrots and Peas appeal

Due to the current economic conditions more and more people are finding it difficult to feed their families. A group of five ladies in the community has embarked on a project to try to assist those vulnerable families.

Carrots and Peas Kitchen, based at Kenneth Gardens in Umbilo, was established in 2009 for this purpose. It has been registered with the Department of Social Development as an NPO (non profit organisation) registration no. 080-144-NPO.

Kenneth Gardens is a municipal owned complex of 282 flats housing about 1500 residents, many of whom are elderly, disabled or un-employed and in dire need of help. We supply tea and cake to the senior residents on Tuesdays and a cooked meal to about 150 people in this complex on Wednesdays. We also feed many people at Flamingo Court, a rundown block of flats in Umbilo Road.

In addition we deliver bread to Carrington Heights Junior Primary School, where many of the children are from informal settlements in surrounding areas. The bread may be their only meal of the day.

In order to keep this project going a great deal of help is required and we appeal to you to assist with donations in cash or kind. We urgently need an industrial gas cooker, a refrigerator, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, a regular supply of groceries and vegetables and above all, funding to buy supplies and to pay for transport facilities.

We appeal to all potential donors to support this worthy cause and we invite you to contact Zandile (031 2055606) or Joyce (031 2056789) and by arrangement to meet us for further information. We thank you.

Sincerely yours

Joyce Gunkel (Secretary)
